FAQ: The Climate Collaborative's Integration into OSC
Why is the Climate Collaborative integrating into One Step Closer (OSC)?
For more than a year, the Climate Collaborative Board explored multiple pathways for the organization's future. After thoughtful consideration, we concluded that integrating with One Step Closer provides the strongest long-term home for our community and our work.
This also represents a natural evolution of a relationship that began nearly a decade ago. The Climate Collaborative was originally founded in 2017 through a partnership between One Step Closer and the Sustainable Food Trade Association before becoming an independent 501(c)(3) in 2021. Throughout that time, both organizations have remained committed to supporting purpose-driven companies and accelerating positive change across the food system.
By bringing our communities together, we believe we can create even greater opportunities for learning, collaboration, and impact while preserving the trusted relationships, practitioner-focused programming, and collaborative spirit that have always defined the Climate Collaborative.
When will this integration take place?
The Climate Collaborative will continue operating through the end of 2026 while fulfilling its existing commitments. During that time, several key programs, including Climate Day and the Climate Leaders Awards, will transition to OSC in preparation for the full integration.
At the end of 2026, we anticipate fully integrating the Climate Collaborative into One Step Closer and dissolving the Climate Collaborative as an independent 501(c)(3). While the legal entity will conclude, our goal is for the community, relationships, and many of the programs people value to continue and grow through OSC.
One of the themes we heard consistently from our community throughout this process was a desire for greater year-round connection, practical support, and opportunities to collaborate. As a 501(c)(6) membership organization, OSC is designed to serve and convene businesses over the long term. We believe this structure provides a strong foundation for expanding educational programming, strengthening peer-to-peer connections, and creating new opportunities for collaboration across the food system.
At the same time, OSC maintains a fiscal sponsorship relationship that enables tax-deductible charitable contributions to continue supporting educational programming and other charitable initiatives that benefit the broader community.
Our company is a Climate Collaborative sponsor. How will this impact me?
Climate Collaborative sponsors will continue to receive the visibility and benefits associated with their sponsorship through the remainder of 2026. Over the coming months, we will also follow up directly with our Sponsor and Service Provider Member communities to share next steps and ensure a smooth transition into the OSC community.
What will happen to the Climate Collaborative's programs?
We are committed to maintaining continuity for the community throughout the transition.
Several flagship programs—including Climate Day, the Climate Leaders Awards, the Climate Leaders Circle, and the Regenerative Transition Community of Practice—are expected to continue, although some programs may evolve over time. OSC will evaluate future programming during early 2027 and will continue communicating openly as plans develop.
Our company made Climate Commitments through the Climate Collaborative. What will happen to the Commitment Program?
The Climate Commitment Program will continue through the end of 2026.
During early 2027, OSC will evaluate the future of the program and determine the best path forward. We recognize that many companies rely on their Climate Commitment as part of the UNFI Climate Action Partnership and are committed to providing clarity well before any changes take effect.
What will happen to Climate Day? Can I still submit a session for Climate Day 2027?
OSC is working with New Hope to develop a vision for Climate Day 2027.
Our goal is to build on the Climate Collaborative's legacy of convening the food industry around climate action while exploring new opportunities to engage the broader OSC community. Additional details will be shared as planning progresses.
Will the Climate Leaders Awards continue?
Yes! OSC intends to continue the Climate Leaders Awards as a way of recognizing and celebrating leadership across the food industry. We look forward to sharing more about the 2027 Awards in the coming months.
Will the Regenerative Transition Community of Practice continue?
Yes! The Community of Practice is expected to continue as part of OSC's programming, and Courtney Pineau and Jeff Bos plan to return in 2027 to facilitate the next cohort.
Will OSC continue offering free or low-cost climate education?
Education has always been central to both organizations. OSC is currently evaluating its future climate programming, but one of its core commitments is providing educational opportunities for both members and the broader food industry. Additional information will be shared as plans are finalized.
Can organizations still make tax-deductible charitable contributions?
Yes! The Climate Collaborative will continue responsibly stewarding its existing grants and charitable contributions throughout the transition.
While OSC is a 501(c)(6) membership organization, it maintains a fiscal sponsorship relationship that allows tax-deductible charitable contributions to support educational programming and other charitable initiatives. We are happy to work with funders and donors to determine the most appropriate giving pathway based on their goals.
Who is OSC for?
OSC is built for the people driving the natural products industry forward including brand leaders, entrepreneurs, retailers, brokers, and industry nonprofits alike. Most join through CEO Chapters, Community Membership, or as Partners. Retailers, brokers, and B2B suppliers are especially encouraged to get involved as Community Members or Partners.
What happens next?
Over the coming months, we will continue integrating the organizations thoughtfully and transparently while fulfilling our existing commitments.
Some decisions are still being finalized, but we are committed to communicating openly with our community throughout the process. We invite you to join our Community Town Hall to learn more about the vision behind this integration and ask questions.
