Glens’ Garden Market has climate action in its DNA. Founder Danielle Vogel created the Washington, D.C.-based store after leaving a career working on climate change legislation in the U.S. Senate. “Glen’s exists to make climate change progress – one bite at a time – by serving Good Food from close by, and growing relationships with partners, who treat their land, their animals and their ingredients with respect,” says Vogel.
Their goal is to upend the food system, starting small, with locally-sourced food that comes from suppliers committed to sustainability and climate action. Glen’s close collaboration with carefully selected suppliers has bolstered 45 women-owned businesses in the D.C. area, while minimizing the store’s direct impact and upstream emissions.
Glen’s made all nine commitments through the Climate Collaborative in late 2017, but Vogel was not through. Leading up to Earth Day this spring, Vogel took her supplier engagement one step further, putting out a call to action to the 79 businesses they've helped launch and all the members of the Good Food Merchants' Collaborative, urging them to join Glen’s in making climate action commitments through the Climate Collaborative.
We are amazed to see the success of Glen’s outreach. In less than a week, fifteen of its suppliers and peers made nearly 100 public climate action commitments through the Collaborative!
These companies are setting their own impressive climate goals, from Sip City, who is developing zero-waste shipping containers for their products to reduce packaging impact, to TRUE Syrups and Garnishes, who has built a business around sustainably and ethically sourced ingredients as part of the agriculture and deforestation goals. Needless to say, we are absolutely thrilled to have these companies be part of the Collaborative and very grateful to Glen’s for making the introduction.
Wondering how they did it? Vogel sent an email highlighting Glen’s commitment to reducing its own climate impacts and invited companies to step up and make their climate goals public through the Climate Collaborative. That’s it!
